The Grand Rapids Downtown Market, a transformative project completed in 2013, exists as a celebration of local food, sustainable living, and urban renewal, all planned and designed by Progressive Companies, in partnership with Hugh A. Boyd Architects. With an expansive 130,000 square feet and an investment of $21 million, this endeavor included the brownfield redevelopment of former warehouse structures, creating a dynamic mixed-use complex. It encompasses an indoor market with 24 permanent vendor stalls, up to 40 farmers market shed stalls, a 5,000-square-foot restaurant, and 4,500 square feet of retail space. Educational and office spaces are integrated into the design, fostering learning and community growth.

The rooftop greenhouses exemplify the LEED Gold-certified market’s commitment to sustainability. The complex also boasts a demonstration kitchen, a 5,000-square-foot incubator kitchen, a children's kitchen and banquet room, and meeting rooms for gatherings and events. Sustainability remains at the forefront, with features like stormwater design, energy optimization, and community connectivity contributing to a vibrant and environmentally-conscious urban landscape. During its first year, the market generated 215 new jobs and $5 million in retail sales. The Grand Rapids Downtown Market is a testament to visionary design and urban development, offering year-round facilities and programs supporting local farmers, independent businesses, and the community.
