St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2012, was designed as a welcoming space for a diverse, multicultural, and multigenerational community. The 37,998-square-foot facility includes a 700-seat worship center, a 100-seat chapel, gathering spaces, and areas for reconciliation, baptism, and administration. Progressive Companies collaborated closely with parish members to create a building that reflects Catholic identity and fosters a deeper spiritual connection through liturgy and sacrament.
The design emphasizes serenity and reverence, integrating natural light through clerestory windows and stained glass to inspire worship and reflection. A bronze baldacchino shelters the tabernacle, portraying beauty and mystery. Completed in 2014, the project received the AIA Grand Rapids Design Award and the Solomon Award for Best Church Building Design from Worship Facilities Magazine.
