The Oxford Trails project in Grand Rapids, MI, is a forward-thinking, place-based initiative that unites underserved neighborhoods while connecting them to the Grand River redevelopment downtown. This comprehensive project will create not only physical connections through new trails and a community-focused destination park but will also foster social and economic opportunities for local residents. By addressing both mobility and community cohesion, the project enhances the quality of life for the Black Hills and surrounding neighborhoods.
The Oxford Trails project is defined by Progressive Companies' grassroots community engagement, focusing on the principles of engaging, informing, and empowering residents. We worked closely with the Black Hills and Roosevelt Park neighborhoods, where 50% of residents are non-white, forming neighborhood leadership teams, conducting small group meetings, and translating materials into four languages. Our innovative engagement efforts included large community events and a mock radio station to interview residents, capturing over 1,000 voices to shape the design.
Additionally, we hired Josue Centeno, a local resident from that community, as part of the engagement team. His dedication and passion for authentic engagement led to a full-time role with Progressive Companies, where he continues contributing to various community projects.
