Eastern Michigan University and Gilbane Development Company teamed up in a public-private partnership (P3) to lead the pioneering Westview and Lakeview apartments at the state’s second oldest public university.

The 300-bed Westview building forms a new focal point on its part of campus, with primary elevations framing a new plaza feature that will play an important role in student game-day social events and fundraising tailgates. The building shape preserves land to the south that is planned for future athletic fields, and provides much needed parking for an improved campus experience.

As for the Lakeview building, the three wings containing 200 beds respond to important campus elements surrounding this challenging site. The primary elevation features a front porch overlooking a small lake around which campus social life revolves. Two wings wrap a new entry feature that provides clarity of entry and circulation to the site. Importantly, the building shape preserves a grove of old-growth hardwood trees that softens the edge of campus.

Progressive Companies led the project team as the design-build architect of record, and Mackey Mitchell Architects / Moody Nolan, Inc. partnered as associate design architects. Progressive Companies also provided the full scope of engineering services, including mechanical, electrical, and civil design.
