The Marble-Coldwater Lake Chain Improvement Project is dedicated to enhancing the interconnected lakes near Coldwater, MI. These lakes, initially connected in the early 20th century to transport marl for cement production, now form a vital ecosystem covering 2,826 acres. In the early 1990s, a feasibility study funded by the EPA’s Section 314 Clean Lakes Program identified key strategies for improvement. Progressive Companies installed large sedimentation basins on the primary agricultural drains, Fisher Creek and Tallahassee Creek, and distributed a best management practices guidebook to over 3,000 residents in 1995. Since 2012, Progressive Companies has been committed to collecting water quality data from each of the eight lakes and overseeing invasive species management. This complex system requires a combination of management strategies tailored to the diverse waterbodies within this unique connected ecosystem. Through these efforts the firm aims to preserve and enhance the environmental health and navigability of the Marble-Coldwater Lake Chain for future generations.
